March Update

Hope this post finds you well! I hope everybody had a wonderful, and fun March break.

We have had a busy month, full of excitement, and lots of learning.

Grade 6:
In language, we have just finished up our narratives They are looking amazing as I begin to read through the final version and mark them. We are now working on comparing and contrasting and different ways to explain.  We also are continuing to read our class read aloud "Fish In A Tree".

In Math we have been working through surface area and are now exploring volume of 3D shapes.  There will be a quiz next week (April 3rd).

Grade 4:
In language we continue to dive deep into A Boy Called Bat (they're so excited about it, they have asked me to buy the second book). Through this we are learning about and working on, word choice, tone, perspective, narration, character traits and learning a whole lot about skunks!

In math we are working on strategies to solve multiplication and division. If you are looking for math to work on at home, have your child display different multiplication facts or division facts using one of our four strategies (arrays, repeated addition/subtraction, equal groups and/or skip counting/number line). They are getting so comfortable with these strategies. There will be a "check-in" on Friday March 29th.

Upcoming Reminders:
Our school's Lenten project this year is in support of Planting Seeds International. Ask your child to explain more about it to you.  Each Friday, we are having a different theme day to help raise money. Friday March 29: Lumberjack day (plaid)
Friday April 5th: "ER" day (teachER, farmER, anything that ends in "ER").

Our school's STEAM night is on Thursday, April 5th/2019. Please join us for an evening of fun! Our class (along with Mme. Roy's class) will have the classroom divider open and we will be building castles, solving for surface area (grade 6) and also experimenting with circuits to make them light up! Hope to see you there.

As always, if there is anything, please don't hesitate to contact me!

February Update

Hope this post finds you well!
The last couple weeks have been busy and exciting.

Grade 4's have been working on finding importance within texts, and we continue to read A Boy Called Bat together as a class.  In math, we have been exploring money amounts, and using different strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems (number lines, hundreds charts, etc.).  I challenge you to pick a dollar amount, and ask your child to "make change". We're getting quite good at this!

Grade 6's have been continuing to work hard on their narrative stories. We are all getting close to finishing and starting on the editing and revising stage. I'm really looking forward to reading them in full.  In math, we are continuing to work on measurement, specifically, working on area and perimeter. Our focus right now if working on word problems and showing our thinking.

Upcoming Important Dates:
March 6th: Ash Wednesday
March 7th: Grade 6 Graduation Pictures
March 9th-17th- March Break (enjoy your time!)

End of January Update

Hi Everyone,

It's been a very busy couple of weeks - especially with some inclement weather last week. We are still playing catch up! Hope everyone is staying warm and safe as the snow continues to fall.

We have moved onto our Measurement unit in Math.

Grade 6's have been working on measuring lengths, finding perimeter of complex shapes, and converting different units (mm, cm, m & km). There will be a small quiz on Friday on these topics.

Grade 4's have been working on measuring lengths, choosing an appropriate measuring unit, and solving perimeter of basic shapes. They will also have a small quiz on Friday on these topics.

In language, we are starting our own narrative writing pieces. I'm really looking forward to seeing their stories come to life as we continue to plan and write them.

I would like to start by introducing myself. I am Mrs. O'Connor and will be your child's teacher for the remainder of the school year. I am so excited to be joining the St. James family. I am looking forward to getting to know you and your child over the remainder of the school year. If you would like to get a hold of me, please don't hesitate to contact me through your child's agenda or contact the school.

It will range from week to week but it is made with the purpose of keeping you informed on what we are up to in the classroom. It will also include any school reminders, copies of important communication notes, reminders about upcoming quiz's or projects as well as links to helpful resources.

Grade 6 parents... There will be a Holy Trinity Parent Info Night on Thursday, January 24th at 7 pm. Please note this meeting is not for students, it is for parents only.
